Designing filigree is an art, a delicate art with intricate lines that are carefully hand-made with very thin threads of sterling silver.  Nowadays some artisans have started to work filigree in silver plated (a work much less expensive than actual sterling silver)

Diseñar filigrana es un arte, un arte delicado donde se utilizan lineas hechas con finos hilos de plata. En los últimos años, artesanos han comenzado a trabajar la filigrana enchapada en plata, (lo que cuesta menos que el trabajo hecho en plata pura)

Filigree is a traditional technique that has its beginnings  in the northern part of Peru. Filigree was born in Piura Catacaos, different states in Peru also practice filigree but the work most known are the ones made by the masters craftsmen of Catacaos.

La filigrana es una técnica tradicional que tiene sus inicios en el norte del Peru.             La filigrana nace en la ciudad de Piura en el pueblo de Catacaos. Otras ciudades en Peru también han desarrollado esta técnica pero el trabajo mas conocido es el de los maestros de Catacaos.

For years I have designed jewelry always inspiring myself in my ancient Peruvian culture but giving it a more modern twist.

Por años he diseñado joyas, siempre inspiradas en el pasado milenario de mi cultura Peruana pero con motivos modernos.

There is a traditional dance in Peru known as marinera and part of its tradition is that the woman has to wear traditional filigree jewelry. For years I have seen the traditional dormilonas, or the pavas (a peacock inspired earrings) made with the ancient filigree technique. See below my first designs inspired in the dormilonas.

Hay un baile tradicional Peruano conocido como la marinera, parte de esta tradición es que la mujer usa joyeria tradicional hecha en filigrana. Como son los populares aretes de dormilonas o las tradicionales pavas hechas con la delicada técnica de la filigrana.

Estos son los primeros diseños hechos inspirados en las tradicionales dormilonas.

Then the perfect time came and I was asked if I could design marinera earrings, to what I said YES. I also knew if I were to design these earrings they will have an influence on the traditional marinera earrings but with
a modern twist.                                           Let me share with you a little bit of the process and final designs created with filigree.

There is an interview where I asked what kind of earrings are you looking to have, how long, what do you like? nature, beach, etc and some other questions that will help me understand what you are looking for. For best results there has to be a special connection with my customer, is not always about money.

Luego llego el momento perfecto y me preguntaron si podia diseñar aretes de marinera, a lo que mi respuesta fue SI. Al mismo tiempo sabia que si iba a diseñar estos aretes tenia que tener una influencia de los tradicionales aretes de marinera con un toque moderno. Aquí comparto con un ustedes un poco del proceso y creación final de mis creaciones con filigrana.    En un entrevista te pregunto mas o menos que tipo de aretes quieres, tienes alguna idea, haz visto algo que te gusta? te gusta la naturaleza, la playa? y otras preguntas que me ayudan a diseñar lo que estas buscando. Para mi debe haber una relación muy especial con mi cliente, el dinero no es todo.
