Hello everyone! This is a special blog written by Yuri Lopez, Wanda Hernandez, Maia Dahan, Bridget Coral and myself…

Yuri Lopez – George Mason University

“My name is Yuri Lopez and I have had the pleasure of working with Evelyn Brooks and her company, Evelyn Brooks Designs, doing event planning. With Evelyn’s guidance, I was able to gain management and marketing skills that have helped me as I work to complete my degree in Public Relations and Event Planning at George Mason University.”

“By working with Mrs. Brooks on specific events, I have been able to network with many professionals including Gloria Del Pozo, Director of Finance and Administration for the National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI).  Thanks to Mrs. Del Pozo’s kind words of encouragement and support, I was able to gain the courage to apply for the NHLI’s Latinas Learning to Lead Program (LLL).”

“After a rigorous application, on June 17, 2012,  I was selected along with 19 other Latina Leaders from across the country to participate in NHLI’s LLL Program. The LLL is dedicated to helping young Latinas stay in school and prepare to enter the workforce of the 21st century.”

“Overall, the journey with Evelyn Brooks Designs has truly been a rewarding experience and one that I continue to learn from. The skills that I have learned from Evelyn and LLL give me much strength and energy to take on any challenge and follow my goals. I look forward to everything that awaits! Thank you Evelyn Brooks Designs for everything that you have taught me and for the opportunities that I have received.”

“On a funny note, during one of the end-of-the-year events where I participated as part of the Evelyn Brooks Designs team, I got so excited when I saw the famous bachata singer Andy Andy, and I was thrilled to have my picture taken with him. I was telling Ms. Brooks, “Do you know him?” And she said, “NO?! Who is he?” And I kept telling her, “It’s ANDY ANDY!” And Ms. Brooks’ face was like, WHO IS ANDY ANDY??? But I was so excited to be able to meet him!”

Bridget Coral-Soria – Northern Virginia Community College

Working with EBD has been a great pleasure. I have learned so much and it feels great to be a part of this wonderful, growing business. I hope that I can continue learning and be part of EBD for a very long time.”

Bridget & John working in the studio

I met Bridget Coral-Soria when she was around 10 years old. In one of my many trips to Virginia, I learned that she happened to be my friend’s niece. Years later, I was invited to give a speech at West Potomac Academy for their Fashion Design Program and Bridget was there. At that time, I welcomed junior and senior high school students to intern with EBD. She asked me if she could intern with me, and she was only 15 years old. Bridget began working for Evelyn Brooks Designs when she was 18 years old and learned a lot. It has been four years since she started working for me. I have seen her growing professionally, but most importantly, I can trust her 100% when it comes to making my jewelry pieces with her golden hands.

Wanda Hernandez – Virginia Commonwealth University

“I’ve been interning for Mrs. Brooks since the age of 16. Working alongside Mrs. Brooks has made me feel like a pivotal part of her company because we have built a great relationship with one another. However, the best part is seeing Evelyn Brooks Designs grow into the jewelry company it is now. I’m excited for the company’s prosperous future.”

I met Wanda through the Fashion Design Program offered at the West Potomac Academy High school. I was truly impressed by her work ethic, being only 16 years old. She was always proactive. I kept telling her if you continue being as proactive as you are, please let me know when you graduate, because I need people like you to be by my side as my company grows.

Maia Dahan – American University
